Joseph Padfield graduated with distinction from the Opera Course of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2014. He was an Alvarez Young Artist at Garsington Opera in 2012 & 2017, a Les Azuriales Young Artist in 2015, a recipient of the 2016-17 International Opera Awards Bursary Fund and a current recipient of the International Opera Awards Artist Development Fund 2017-18. He continues his vocal studies with Gary Coward.

He has understudied roles including Commendatore (Garsington Opera), Doctor Pellèas et Mèlisande (Glyndebourne Festival), Zuniga Carmen (Scottish Opera); Dog/Death/Smith Swanhunter (Opera North); Eisenring Biedermann and the Arsonists (Independent Opera) Leporello (Garsington Opera) and Guglielmo (Garsington Opera).
Solo oratorio engagements have included Faurè Requiem at St Martin-in-the Fields; Handel Messiah with Lawrence Cummings; Dvorák Te Deum with St John of Jerusalem Festival Chorus; Monteverdi Vespers with Bridgewater Sinfonia; Haydn Nelson Mass with Vivace Choir; the world premiere of Ian Schofield's Freedom with Southampton Choral Society and Fauré Requiem, Campra Requiem, Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem and Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs.
